Capture the essence of your Chicago with a photo depicting a favorite fixture in your neighborhood – it may be the dog run at your local park, your corner coffee shop or your mailman.

One photo will appear each day from now until June 19 on a large display outside the Michigan Avenue store, allowing those strolling the Magnificent Mile to see 'Your Chicago.'

Three photographers will also each receive a Nokia N90 video phone for the best pictures.

Gettin' Hitched

milo4x4.jpg

One of our own, Brian Milo, is marrying his sweetheart, Judi Nelson, today in Oregon, Illinois by the banks of the Rock River. We'd like to wish Milo and Judi all our best wishes as they begin the rest of their lives together.

Several of his fellow photobloggers will be attending the ceremony armed to the teeth (naturally enough) with weapons of mass image capturing. Expect a great series of the wedding and following celebration.

Ah, l'amour toujour...

Upcoming People/Street Photography Events

Summer's here and the time is right for taking pictures on the street, to paraphrase Martha and the Vandellas. And there are three public events starting this weekend that are great opportunities for people and street photography:

The first, of course, is Taste of Chicago, which begins this Friday and runs through July 4 in Grant Park.

Also running this weekend at Grant Park is the Chicago Country Music Festival this Saturday and Sunday at the Petrillo Bandshell.

And, last but not least, there's the 36th annual Chicago Pride Parade. It starts at 12 noon at the corner of W. Belmont and N. Halsted, wending its way north on Halsted to Waveland. Get there early. Last year, over 400,000 spectators showed up.

So slather on the sunblock, grab your favorite digital or film camera (or two or even three as in my case) and go out and shoot!

Chicago Photobloggers Meetup/Shootout Reminder

Just a reminder that the Chicago Photobloggers meetup/shootout will be held Sunday, June 19 (Father's Day) beginning at 1 pm at the Custer Street Art Fair. The staging area will be at the Starbucks on Main Street just east of Chicago Avenue.

For those of you who will be driving, please be advised that parking in that particular area will be virtually nonexistent. Be prepared to park either west of Ridge or north or south of the fairgrounds. There is a cheap public parking garage in downtown Evanston on Church near Chicago. From there you can hop on the CTA Purple Line southbound to the Main Street stop or walk the approximate mile or so south along Chicago Avenue to the staging area.

It's Your Choice

At Sunday's meetup, we talked about a meetup at Millennium Park next month. Later it dawned on me that the Custer Street Fair on Sunday, June 19 in Evanston would also be a great location for a meetup/shootout. Plenty of food, arts (including photography), street/people photography possibilities, etc. What do you think? Custer Street Fair or Millennium Park? Cast your vote by replying to this post. The most votes cast for one or the other by 11:59 pm on June 1 gets to be where we meet. Vote early. Vote often.

Andre Kertesz at the Stephen Daiter Gallery

Through May 28, Andre Kertesz, a personal favorite of mine and a master and pioneer of 20th century photography is being exhibited at the Stephen Daiter Gallery on 311 W Superior. The exhibit is amazing as I've only seen his work in art books and textbooks; and the prints are all arund the theme of "Observations, Thoughts and Reflections" which I found quite interesting. It's deffinitly worth a trip downtown guys!

Jinx'd! (May Photobloggers Meetup Update)

The bloggers have spoken. By unanimous decision, the next Chicago Photobloggers meetup and shootout will be held Sunday, May 22 at 1 pm at Jinx Cafe, 1928 W. Division, in the Gorilla's 'hood, Wicker Park.

May Meetup in Wicker Park

The next Chicago Photobloggers meetup and shootout will be held Sunday, May 22 at 1 pm in the Gorilla's 'hood, Wicker Park. After winnowing down the restaurant list the Gorilla sent me, I've narrowed our choices down to two fine establishments:

Leo's Lunchroom, 1809 W. Division

and

Jinx Cafe, 1928 W. Division

Leo's has both breakfast food and great sandwiches. It is also one of the few Wicker Park establishments that takes reservations for Sunday brunch. The bad news is that Metromix says that reservations for more than 10 is kind of pushing it considering their small size.

Jinx is less busy but they have less of a selection of food. Mostly pastries, bagel sandwiches and vegetarian fare. What they lack in food choices, they more than make up for with their delicious milkshakes and strong coffee beverages. Another advantage to Jinx is that this is one of the sites that we discussed regarding doing our first ever group photo exhibition (not that we can't stop by there later).

I'm going to leave this up to all of you. Cast your vote by this Sunday by replying to this post. And if you can come up with any other places, let me know ASAP. Vote early and often. Let the balloting begin... :)

Versionfest

This weekend begins Version (Flash required), a festival that focuses on art, media, technology and politics. The program looks pretty interesting, and if you're around Chicago you may want to try and find their public art - pretty easy camera fodder. I'm sure if you poked around their program you'd find a photography related events to attend.

As you may all know, this coming Saturday Is the annual St. Patricks Day Parade and festivities.  You better believe I am gonna be there to watch them turn that dark green Chicago River into a bright radioactive green!  Would anyone like to meet me at the river ceremony and then sprint to the metal fences along the parade?  If so, just let me know.

Chicago Photobloggers March Madness Meetup

It's March Madness time. So in the spirit of the arrival of what passes for spring, the next Chicago Photobloggers meetup will be Sunday, March 13 at 9 am at the:

New Maxwell Street Market
W. Canal and S. Roosevelt Rd.
Chicago

The market is open from 7 am to 3 pm, but as Ron S. from slats.org and bighappyfunhouse fame tells us, the market starts dying down after 1 pm.

Some of you may wonder why the Maxwell Street Market is no longer on Maxwell Street. To make a long story short, Da Mayor (Part Deux) closed down the old market in his infinite and enlightened wisdom in 1995, just like he did Meigs Field -- only not with bulldozers in the middle of the night. The old site was taken over by UIC to expand their dominion over the Near West Side, and the new site came into being a few years later.

We'll all meet up at the corner of Canal and Roosevelt, wait 15 minutes or so for any stragglers, and then do our traditional shootout. Ron S. tells us that the real finds are a block or so away. It should be a great time for a lot of street and people photography (weather permitting, of course).

Afterwards (11-11:30 am???), we'll meet for brunch at one of Ferocious Nick's favorite places:

White Palace Grill
1159 S. Canal
Chicago, IL 60607

If anyone on the North Side lakefront needs a ride, I still have three spots available in the old Taurus, four if one wants to ride in air conditioned comfort on the roof rack (uh, just kidding, folks!). Don't hesitate to email me if you need a lift.

If any of you would like to join us but can't bear the thought of coming THAT early, email me and I'll give you my cell phone number so I can let you know where we are at any given moment (sorry, no GPS services are available). Of course, everyone who doesn't want to brave the mad March weather -- which, in the Windy City, can come in like a lion and out like a bratwurst (hold the 'kraut) -- can just meet up with us at the White Palace.

WARNING: If you're driving, get there early enough to park at a metered parking space. There's usually parking west of the market in the more industrial sections of that area. The city is notorious for setting up little parking traps so they can ticket and tow your vehicle away, and enhance their revenue at your expense at the same time.

Next Photobloggers Meetup?

One of the things that we neglected to do at the last meetup was to come up with a date, time and place for the next one. Any ideas? Sunday, March 12 @ 1pm works for me. How about the rest of you?

Plus, any ideas where we would like to meet? North side, The Loop, South side? I'm open to suggestions and am happy to make the arrangements/reservations if someone can come up with a place we can all meet up.

Call for February Meet-Up

As per the suggestion of Steven (photoloukey.com) at our first meet-up, I'm hereby officially putting out a call for the next meet-up:

Uncommon Ground
1214 W Grace, Chicago
(at N Clark in Wrigleyville)
Sunday, February 6, 2005 at 1 pm

If this works for everyone, please e-mail me at outofcontxt@gmail.com and I'll make the reservation. I'll need to know if you're coming no later than Sunday, January 30. We'll eat some great food (UG is one of my favorite Sunday brunch places), take untold photos of ourselves, exchange tips, tricks and the occasional off-color joke (just kidding! or am I?) and discuss other stuff, including setting up group shows at Jinx Cafe, Uncommon Ground and other venues, as well as a group shootout afterwards (weather permitting). We've got Wrigley Field, the Alta Vista Terrace rowhouses, the N Southport Ave business district, as well as two cemeteries (Graceland and Wunders) to conquer (photographically, that is).

I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as some new ones, as well. See you there!

Photos from Meet-Up!

Hey, everyone. Had a fantastic time! It was great to see all the different people. I didn't take that many photos; I took maybe 18 good photos of the guys.

Here's my flickr photoset. All 18 pictures (ha).

Would love to chat with those who came, a little more, and even those who were not able to come. Feel free to IM me (on AIM or AOL) at: nichtotheolas. Thanks for a great Sunday. Let's start organizing next month's event, soon!

Final Meet-Up Call

Final call for our First Meet-Up. Please e-mail nfeder@gmail.com to let me know that you are coming. Here's what we are doing:

Puck's at the Museum of Contemporary Art
220 East Chicago Avenue, just one block east of Michigan Avenue
                   January 9th, 2005 @ 1 PM

Edit: If you are coming, please come straight to the restaraunt. That's easier than, like, holding up a sign.

Meet-Up

So far we've got 6 people who are coming to the First Annual Chicago Photobloggers Meet-Up. I'm going to make reservation on January 3rd, 2005. So make sure you're all RSVP-ed to me by then.

Thinking ahead to the future, however, I was thinking that we could do something along the lines of what they did in NYC. I could start work on that if anyone would be interested. Let me know because it's something I would love to see happen.

It's a digital-era and I want to see how different people are capturing the city. I think we can talk about the non-digital stuff on Jan. 9. Once again, my e-mail address nfeder@gmail.com. Please e-mail me about this (subject: "Chicago Photoblog Meet-Up 2"). I'm going to need some help talking to the Apple store and a way to get eight photographers to speak.

First Chicagoland Meet-Up!

First off, let me say how thrilled I am to be apart of this long-awaited blog. Chicago is a such a great city to be photoblogging and I'm glad to be one of them. I've never met another photoblogger from this city but I would love to in the near future! Thus, I'm in the beginning of stages of organizing a meet-up! Some may think it's awkward for a 15-year-old to be organizing such an event so I'm asking for some help on this one.

Anyone who is interested in helping organize the event, I would to hear some ideas you may have(nfeder@gmail.com). I was thinking we could do a group Mirror Project submission at The Bean, then eat lunch at Cosi (which a little bit north of the Art Institute, on the opposite side of the street). Just some brainstorming. Seriously, however, please, please, let me know of any ideas any Chicago bloggers may have...

This TypePad is hard to format! Very strange...
