Two at MCA

Photo: Catherine Opie
The Museum of Contemporary Art presents two photography exhibits beginning Saturday, May 20.
The first is a major restrospective of German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. "One of the most important and distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s," according to the MCA, Tillman's "work is internationally recognized for its richly evocative and stylishly intimate reflection on the often overlooked objects and moments in everyday life. Much of his work concentrates on deceptively casual and unforced views of friends and acquaintances, catching them off-guard and at their most unguardedly 'human.'"
In addition, the MCA will be presenting new work by L.A.-based photographer Catherine Opie from her American Cities series, entitled American Cities (Chicago). The MCA says that "these images present a nuanced vision of key aspects of Chicago’s identity in a revelatory and unexpected way that reflects an intermingled formal, conceptual, and documentary emphasis."
Both shows open May 20, 2006. The Tillman retrospective runs through August 13, 2006 while the Opie exhibit continues through October 15.
