Chicagoist Focus Wanted

chicagoisthelp.jpg

Chicago is looking for people to contribute to their site on a regular basis. Most notable is that they need someone to regularly post photographs in their "Focus" section. From their website:

Focus
Chicagoist loves to bring you photos of our city and our city's people. We added the Flickr button so everyone can participate, but we still want to get a photographer of our own for the Focus feature of the site. Share your photos with us on a weekly basis.

If you'd like to apply for any of these postitions, send an email to chicagoistapply(at)gmail(dot)com and indicate the position you're applying for in the subject line. In the email tell us about yourself, why you'd be good on that beat, and throw in a sample post if you like.

Chicago Public Radio Photo Call

WBEZ.jpg

Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ 91.5 in Chicago, WBEQ 90.7 in Morris, WBEW 89.5 in Chesterton) is looking for photography submissions to their website. Each day on their website, they feature a different Chicago photo. Their home page gets about 10,000 visitors a day, so there is a lot of exposure for people trying to get their images seen. Here are the submission guidelines:

--Shots that depict Chicagoland: the people, the neighborhoods, the sights, etc.
--The more recent, the better!
--Photos that don't require captions
--Landscape orientation (i.e., horizontal)
--Send the raw picture (should be at least 500 pixels wide at 72 dpi)
--They'll resize, crop, and make minor adjustments (contrast, brightness, etc.) as necessary
--In return, they will offer a credit that can contain a link either to your Web site or e-mail address where folks can track you down

Send your submissions to Josh Andrews at jandrews@chicagopublicradio.org

The 7x7ers Get Flak

magseven7x7.jpg

From the shameless self-promotion department...

Couldn't make it to the 7x7 exhibit? Have no fear. Point your browsers to Flak Magazine, the online journal of art and media. They've just published a review of the exhibition and a virtual gallery of the work of its participants: Mitch Arsenie, Nick Campbell, Archie Florcruz, Nick Feder, Pablo Korona and Brian Milo. Oh. And me too.

While I may personally have a few quibbles with Ms. Scott's definition of photoblogging -- I see photoblogging in more expansive definition as being a virtual gallery showing the progression of one's photographic body of work over a period of time rather than being solely in the documentary style of its early years (if one calls the end of the last century and the beginning of this one early) -- I see her critique, IMHO, as fair, honest and generally positive. And the presentation of the exhibit and our work was immaculately done. But check it out and decide for yourself.

Gaper's Block featured artist

nickgorilla.jpg

This month Gapers Block is featuring none other than the greyscalegorilla himself, Nick Campbell. The title of his exhibition is simply "Rolleicord Portraits." You might even recognize two of the subjects (awww).

"After months of architectural city shots, I grew slightly bored of photographing buildings. Posed and candid portraits became my new obsession."

What are you waiting for? Go ahead and check it out.

Photoblog Randomizer

blindfold.jpg
I know this has been out for a while now, but i think its still worth mentioning. The Photoblog Randomizer has been one of the coolest things for me to see lately. I load all my favorite sites in Safari using tabbed browsing, and i just dragged the link to the randomizer as one of my tabs. I've discovered plenty of cool sites, mostly in Polish, but its been a great resource to see different people i would never have been able to see.

The Photoblog Randomizer
Go through it real quick, give it 5 minutes. Then post up here your favorite Photoblog.

Ron Slattery @ New York Times

Our very own Ron Slattery, proprietor of slats.org and bighappyfunhouse.com, has gotten a nice write up about his found photos photoblog by Jennifer 8. Lee (no, that's not a typo) in the Circuits section of this morning's New York Times.

The article is called "A Mundane Shot? If It's on a Photoblog, Someone's Interested"

The article is free for the next seven days but registration is required. It's also available via RSS feed.

Proposed NYC Photo Ban Rejected

I know this has nothing to do with the Windy City but this should bring a cheer to everyone. The Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York has dropped its proposed ban on subway photography. According to the New York Times:

"A proposed ban on taking photographs in the subway, meant to thwart potential terrorists, has been rejected as too broad to be enforceable, the police said yesterday. The measure, proposed in May 2004, would have banned people from photographing, videotaping or filming inside subway cars and stations; the press and businesses or individuals with permits would have been exempt. After public comment and discussions with the New York Civil Liberties Union, the police considered a partial ban on photos of tunnels, control booths and other areas closed to the public, but decided against it, said Christopher Dunn, the associate legal director of the civil liberties group. "From the outset, we have believed that a total ban would unnecessarily infringe on First Amendment rights," he said. The decision was first reported in The Daily News yesterday. Paul J. Browne, a police spokesman, said, "We don't feel the broad ban is necessary, and as a practical matter is unenforceable." People taking photos of areas deemed sensitive will still be questioned, Mr. Browne said."

Great news for the rights of photographers!

Challenge!

From Gaper's Block...

"Former GB staffer Luke has a challenge to all the photobloggers and Flickr-heads out there: more people in your photos. 'Chicago is a city of 3 million people, but you'd never know it from its photoblogs and Flickr entries...The facelessness that results approaches misanthropy, and it gives the false impression that Chicago is a cold, vacant and inanimate place.' Hop to it, photogs."

While I don't totally agree, I do believe that most photoblogs in general avoid people shots. I personally have a few shots of people in Chicago, but I admit most are obscured.

Are you up to the challenge? The warmer weather provides numerous opportunities for people photos, so don't pass them up.

Our own Bill Vaccaro of outofcontxt.com is featured in this month's mooncruise*magazine. If you were there for the February meet-up, you'll see some familiar photographs.

Head on over there and check out his work. You'll need Flash, and if you're at work turn down the speakers. Nick F also did a nice blurb on the photoblogs.org blog.

Lincoln photo contest

This weekend is Abe Lincoln's birfday, and if he were alive he'd be putting 196 candles on his cake. Chicagoist wants you to celebrate by participating in their first ever Land of Lincoln photo contest. The rules are simple: your photograph must have Honest Abe in it (duh), it must be at least 400X600 px, it must be your own, blah blah blah. Send them over to lincolnphotocontest@gmail.com by March 5, 2005. The winners get some Lincoln-related stuff (dude, I hope they give away a beard) at a special happy hour.

Take a Detour

The Chicago collaborative weblog Gaper's Block has a section called "Detour" that features an individual take, whether it is art or writing, on a Chicago topic. This week, one of Chicago's most talented photographers and photoblogger Archie FlorCruz is the first to be featured in their monthly "gallery show." The theme is "Chicago's Skyline: Above, Below, and Beyond." Check out the exhibition and why not buy some prints while you're checking it out.  The photographs are fantastic - well done Archie.

Photoblogs.org Fund Drive

As some of you may know, photoblogs.org is in trouble. The site has grown expedentially over the past six months -- there are now more than 8,000 photoblogs registered -- and its popularity has caused the server Brandon uses to run photoblogs.org to overload. He needs $4000 to purchase a new server and software to handle the increased load.

We owe Brandon a great deal for all of his time and effort over the years, as well as his generosity in helping us set up Chicagoland Photobloggers. Any little bit you can contribute will help keep photoblogs.org operating for years to come.

Click here to donate to the photoblogs.org fund drive.

LINKS

Big Happy Fun Ron of the House had mentioned we should post our favorite resources/links/fotologs on the site. I thought this would be the perfect place in the comments for them. Even use this as a place to post a reference to the things we talked about.

the street photographer i was talking about is Bruce Gilden
you can find a link  to his interview on EGG

one portfolio page but i'm sure another google search will produce more.

and, Ron. Satan's Laundromat? Top notch.

(thanks Roderick for allowing me to become an author!)

As promised, I have created a Flickr group for all of us to post photos. You will get posting privileges by invite only, so send me an e-mail at chicagophotoblogs@gmail.com with either your Flickr contact info if you have an account, or just with your e-mail and an alias if you don't have an account to get an invite to post. Until the badge goes up, you can check things out here, the new flickr home for Chicago photobloggers: http://www.flickr.com/groups/chicagophotoblogger/

Scared of Santa?

The holidays are a time when cameras come out the most. Hundreds of thousands of family pictures, pictures of people opening presents, and other pictures of holiday traditions will be taken.

Circulating around the web is a gallery of photographs of kids who are scared of santa. After thumbing through a bunch of these I noticed that the first 25 photos are from Chicagoland families, submitted to the Tribune.

If you're on vacation or if there's no one at your office (as in my case), go ahead and check these out for a good holiday laugh.
