Upcoming People/Street Photography Events
Summer's here and the time is right for taking pictures on the street, to paraphrase Martha and the Vandellas. And there are three public events starting this weekend that are great opportunities for people and street photography:
The first, of course, is Taste of Chicago, which begins this Friday and runs through July 4 in Grant Park.
Also running this weekend at Grant Park is the Chicago Country Music Festival this Saturday and Sunday at the Petrillo Bandshell.
And, last but not least, there's the 36th annual Chicago Pride Parade. It starts at 12 noon at the corner of W. Belmont and N. Halsted, wending its way north on Halsted to Waveland. Get there early. Last year, over 400,000 spectators showed up.
So slather on the sunblock, grab your favorite digital or film camera (or two or even three as in my case) and go out and shoot!

So long, Polycontrast
Wouldn't you know it? Bob from No Traces is taking a darkroom course and Kodak insults him by announcing yesterday that they will no longer manufacture black-and-white papers after the end of the year. According to a Kodak spokesperson, demand for black-and-white paper has declined about 25 percent annually. Another casuality of the digital revolution. I cut my photographic teeth on Polycontrast fiber based paper. So long, Polycontrast, it was fun while it lasted. Hellooooooo Ilford (and Bergger and Oriental, too)...
The good news is that they will still make black and white film and chemicals. While I shoot primarily with Ilford HP5+, my precious HC-110 is safe... for now. The entire article can be viewed here.

Chicago Photobloggers Meetup/Shootout Reminder
Just a reminder that the Chicago Photobloggers meetup/shootout will be held Sunday, June 19 (Father's Day) beginning at 1 pm at the Custer Street Art Fair. The staging area will be at the Starbucks on Main Street just east of Chicago Avenue.
For those of you who will be driving, please be advised that parking in that particular area will be virtually nonexistent. Be prepared to park either west of Ridge or north or south of the fairgrounds. There is a cheap public parking garage in downtown Evanston on Church near Chicago. From there you can hop on the CTA Purple Line southbound to the Main Street stop or walk the approximate mile or so south along Chicago Avenue to the staging area.

Ron Slattery @ New York Times
Our very own Ron Slattery, proprietor of slats.org and bighappyfunhouse.com, has gotten a nice write up about his found photos photoblog by Jennifer 8. Lee (no, that's not a typo) in the Circuits section of this morning's New York Times.
The article is called "A Mundane Shot? If It's on a Photoblog, Someone's Interested"
The article is free for the next seven days but registration is required. It's also available via RSS feed.
