DIY camera
My girlfriend and I needed a new peephole this weekend for our front door, so we went to the nearest huge hardware store and bought one. Looking through it, I noticed that there is a HUGE field of vision that can be seen. The labeling on the box claims that there is a 190 degree field of vision...larger than Nikon's 16mm fisheye lens (which is 180 degrees, if you're wondering). This brings me to the point of this post.
Does anyone have any experience building their own camera? I was wondering if anyone could point me to some tutorials or wants to make a weekend project out of it. A peephole only costs $10, and the rest of the materials surely can't cost that much. I think that a low-tech fisheye camera like this could be pretty fun.
Or, I could end up building a Dirkon and using that at the next meetup. That looks awesome too.

I can't help you with your first question -- but instead of making a whole camera, can you modify one of your exisiting (cheaper) cameras or fashon a lens using the peephole?
I've made and used one of those Dirkons before. I just have one thing to say ... make sure you use thick paper and line the inside with felt or some other material. I had some major fogging and light leaks, so much so that -- while the photos are interesting in their own right -- they're not usable for anything.

I could have sworn there was a recent photo.net thread on this exact topic...but now I can't find it.

I made a pinhole in photography. Not a film one, however. I want to buy one that takes film.
Anyway, it's really complicated because you have to worry about light leaks. And you can get really miserable.
I can tell you more about it if you're coming tomorrow.

Have you guys seen this blog? It hasn't been updated in a while but he does some tight DIY stuff. http://www.dennisonbertram.com/hackmaster/hack_index.htm
I heard about some site where some guy built a macro camera out of a scanner, but I have never been able to find that one. If anyone knows about other DIY blogs feel free to hit me it with a url.

Wow. I was thinking about using one of those wide angle peep holes a few weeks ago and making my own camera with one. Any progress yet? I would be interested to know how it works, if I don't just go ahead and find out for myself.
